Le Balcon

Located in the Saint-James Church on Sainte-Catherine Street West, a few steps from the Quartier des spectacles, Le Balcon is known for its spectacular dinner-shows, where you can take in some jazz, blues, disco, funk or even R’n’B music. This splendid venue, which is now running at full capacity, welcomed me for an evening, and I’d like to tell you all about my experience!

Le Balcon: a beautiful venue reminiscent of American speakeasies

As soon as I arrived in front of St. James’s Church, at around 5:30 p.m., a receptionist told me, with infectious enthusiasm, that the venue was about to open. You can’t help but grin after a welcome like that! As soon as the doors opened, I was bowled over by Le Balcon’s “mystique.” Since the venue is located in the church’s back section, a host escorted me through the maze-like halls of this place of worship, as though I were secretly being led to a speakeasy.

Once my reservation was confirmed, I was blown away by the stage, which was decorated with a luxurious red velvet curtain. Looking up to the left and right, I could see the pews, but more importantly the pulpit, which had been transformed into a DJ table for the occasion. On the walls, photos featuring the local artists who have performed at Le Balcon made the room all the more impressive. They had already won me over.

Delicious bistro cuisine and exceptional service!

To get into the mood, I ordered a Sunset Lover; a mix of vodka, Campari and grapefruit juice enhanced with orange blossom syrup, lime juice, aloe, and blueberry. A truly thirst-quenching drink!

I also took the opportunity to speak with Le Balcon’s first maitre d’hotel, Ms. Nicole Poitras, who told me, “Even though we’re known for our dinner-shows, you can reserve the venue for press conferences, launches, and private groups. And pay attention throughout the evening, we have a few surprises in store for you!” And boy, did I have fun, believe me!

The menu is prepared by a Portuguese-born chef who worked at the Ferreira Café for several years. The appetizers include cod acras, a seasonal soup, and artisanal charcuterie. The main courses include Portuguese Cornish chicken, Icelandic cod, and mushroom ravioli. For dessert, the chef offers you a serving of Crème d’Ange. I chose the cod acras as an appetizer and the mushroom ravioli as a main course, but it was the mind-blowing Crème d’Ange that I found heavenly! Seriously, save yourself a little room for dessert, you won’t regret it.

Please note! Wines, spirits, and cocktails are not included in the package. I advise you to plan your alcohol budget accordingly should the urge to party intensify during the evening.

What makes Le Balcon a really cool place, however, is just how involved the staff gets in the show portion of the evening. In fact, in addition to offering exceptional service, just before the concert started, the entire floor staff participated in a well-choreographed dance routine that ended with a solo performance by a talented waitress. I was really touched by the staff, who obviously get along great, and who really want you to have an exceptional evening.

Get up and dance to the sound of Cloud 9 Funk Project’s funk, soul, and R&B standards

The music for this dinner-show was provided by the excellent Cloud 9 Funk Project, who offered us a bevy of hits with a funk, soul and R&B flavour. Made up of nine incredibly professional musicians, this energetic band didn’t let up from the beginning to the end of the show. From Kool and the Gang’s Get Down on It to Rick James’ Give It to Me Baby, Stevie Wonder’s Superstition and Prince’s Kiss, even the most boring person in the universe couldn’t resist the band’s crazy energy.

Another surprise was waiting for us during the intermission: an employee got on stage with a flute and played a rather impressive solo. All these little surprises added some spice to a truly successful evening.

The rumours are true! If you want to spend an entertaining evening with your colleagues, loved one, or friends, you must add a dinner-show at Le Balcon to your agenda before summer’s over. Open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, this unique venue is sure to entertain and charm you!
